Lagos Life, a Sims-style life simulation built by Nigerian developer Ijeoma Shalom Rayhamen, known online as Shalom, crossed one million players within days of launching on October 1, Nigeria’s Independence Day. Nigerian press including BusinessDay and Techpoint report the count moved from about 100,000 players to a million in roughly four days.

Table of Contents

What is Lagos Life?

How the game works

Why it went viral so fast

Growing pains: hacked naira and a reset

How to play it safely

What is Lagos Life?

Lagos Life is a multiplayer life-simulation game played entirely in a web browser, so there is nothing to download and no app to install. You create a character, get a home, find work, earn and spend money, and meet other players in a shared virtual Lagos, with recognizable neighbourhoods such as Yaba, Mushin and Banana Island and familiar spots like Amala Shitta and Quilox on the map.

The creator says the idea came from growing up on The Sims 3 and wondering what it would be like if the Sims lived in a world inspired by ours, along with seeing Lagos Run, another Nigerian browser game where you drive a danfo through the city. Lagos Life expands that idea from a driving game into a whole simulated city.

How the game works

Every new player is randomly dropped into one of two financial realities: “Nepo”, a playful nod to wealth and nepotism, or “Lapo”, a reference to microfinance and financial struggle. From there, the game becomes a familiar Lagos balancing act.

Working earns you money but drains your character’s energy, so you buy food to refill it before heading back to work. Rent comes due on Saturdays, so you need savings ready before Baba Landlord knocks. Spend too much on luxuries too early and you can run out of cash mid-week. Clubs, malls and social spots improve your character’s mood, and unexpected events regularly force you to adjust plans.

The soundtrack adds to the atmosphere: virtual clubs play music from emerging Nigerian artists, tying the game into the country’s wider music culture.

Why it went viral so fast

The game’s timing and familiarity did most of the work. It launched on Independence Day with a premise young Nigerians instantly recognize: the hustle, rent day, danfo rides, power cuts and the social weight of money and status. Local press report that at the peak of its rise it had hundreds of thousands of players and tens of thousands online at the same time, with millions of visits recorded since launch.

There is also a business story here. Unlike most viral Nigerian games that struggle to earn anything, Lagos Life made money from the start, by renting space in its virtual city to real advertisers, alongside optional in-game naira purchases. Reports also say Abuja and Port Harcourt versions are in the works.

Growing pains: hacked naira and a reset

Rapid growth brought problems. An exploit allowed some players to generate huge amounts of hacked virtual money, and chaotic scenes followed, with users offering billions of naira in virtual funds to strangers, some of it tied to political jokes. The developer responded by resetting the exploited funds, restoring legitimate player balances, and promising fixes to prevent a repeat.

The episode briefly upended the in-game economy, and players who had enjoyed the sudden wealth lost it again. It also showed how quickly the community had become emotionally invested in money that was never real.

How to play it safely

A few practical notes before you jump in:

Use the right address. The original game is most commonly cited at lagoslife.app. The game’s success has already produced a wave of lookalike fan and clone sites with near-identical names, some marked 18+ and some asking for payment. Sign up only at the address the official channels point to, and be careful with any site asking for card details.

Treat purchases as real money. In-game naira top-ups cost actual cash, and they are optional. Nothing in the game requires paying to start or progress.

Protect your account. Use a unique password for your game account, not one you reuse for email or banking, since accounts hold whatever you have invested.

Expect bumps. The game is scaling extremely fast. Exploits, resets and downtime are part of the deal for now.

For a game that started as one developer’s nostalgia project, Lagos Life has become a real demonstration that locally built, browser-based entertainment can reach a national audience in days, without an app store in sight.

Sources

BusinessDay: Lagos Life crosses 1m players as Nigerian-built browser game goes viral
Techpoint Africa: Lagos Life, Sim-style web game crosses 1m players in 4 days
Arise News: How ‘Lagos Life’ Is Capturing Young Nigerians Online
Lagos Life official game

Lagos Life, a free Sims-style browser game set in Lagos built by Nigerian developer Shalom Rayhamen, crossed one million players within days of its October 1 launch.
